Sharply-focused energy and authoritative control are the hallmarks of his style, which translated into performances that captured the clarity of Schubert's orchestral writing, and more importantly, steered clear of over-indulgence. Given such encouragement, a compact SCO delivered both the Third and Fifth Symphonies with lean, clean and spirited playing.
